Bethany Beach Ocean Suites Residence Inn by Marriott
We recently returned to this hotel because our first stay had been exceptional. Unfortunately, during this visit we experienced a very disappointing situation.
Due to an unforeseen circumstance at 3:00 a.m. while traveling from out of state, we decided to return to this hotel. I contacted the overnight representative, Andy, who was very gracious. He informed me that we could check in but would need to check out later that same day and be charged for one night. Because we were checking in so early and clearly needed rest, he kindly offered a 1:00 p.m. checkout instead of the standard 11:00 a.m. checkout. We were very thankful and went to our room to rest.
When we woke up later that morning and began getting ready, I noticed the bathroom appeared unclean. The toilet paper holder was broken/loose, and one of the face towels had dried blue toothpaste or mouthwash residue on it from a previous guest. I was disgusted and disappointed, especially given our prior positive experience. We hurried to get ready and checked out.
At the front desk, I spoke with Christina and explained my concerns. She contacted a manager named Darhan (I believe this is his name to the best of my recollection). I explained the situation, and he apologized and printed a bill indicating that I would not be charged for the stay.
However, after we left to attend a funeral, I received a call from the hotel’s director stating that I owed payment for two nights. She was rude, unprofessional, and spoke in an aggressive tone. I explained that we were walk-ins and did not have a two-night reservation. I also informed her that the manager had already waived the charge and provided documentation. She refused to listen and threatened to send the bill to collections. She repeatedly challenged me about the room issue as though attempting to dispute it after the fact. The interaction felt hostile and extremely inappropriate.
I ended the call and called back requesting to speak with the General Manager, Kevin, who was not available. I spoke again with Darhan, who apologized and stated he would leave a message for the GM and transferred me to Kevin’s voicemail.
This incident occurred on May 14, and as of today, despite calling three additional times with voicemail messages left, I have received no response. I am shocked and deeply disturbed by how this was handled. What began as a simple concern about room cleanliness escalated into an unnecessarily aggressive and unprofessional situation.
Sadly, after this experience, I will not be staying at this hotel again.

After spending decades visiting the Eastern Shore, I can say this Marriott in Bethany Beach stands out. The location is great, the property is modern and consistently clean, and the rooms are comfortable enough to truly settle into for a longer stay or family trip.
What really makes the place special, though, is the people. DeVanna is one of those rare hospitality professionals who makes guests feel genuinely welcome and cared for. Her consistency, positivity, and attention to detail are a big reason we return. Andy, who works overnight, has that same warmth. He made us feel at home in every interaction, and his phrase, “That’s what we’re here for,” perfectly captures the spirit of the hotel.
The breakfast each morning was also a highlight — good variety, healthy options, and a staff that kept everything welcoming and running smoothly even when it got busy.
You can tell this team takes pride in the experience they create, and it shows. This has become one of those places we look forward to returning to every time we’re in Bethany Beach.
