Inside the Studio of Ethel PB Leach
Jun 19, 2025
Curated by Ellen Roney Hughes June 13 through July 27, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, June 13, 2025 (5pm-7pm) Ethel Pennewill Brown Leach was known as a leader of women painters in Delaware for the first half of the twentieth century and was a founding member of the Rehoboth Art League. The League has an extensive collection of Leach’s work which includes oil paintings, etchings, illustrations, drawings, and her personal diaries. Observing the art, we often wonder what the working environment of the studio was like, what materials and equipment were used and how well organized the studio was (messy versus neat). Although mediums and materials are more advanced today compared to the time when Leach was a working artist, they still serve the same purpose. This mini exhibition gives us a glimpse into what Ethel’s studio might have been. In 2024, RAL was gifted a collection of Ethel’s personal equipment that was used in her studio such as her easel, camera, woodblock cutting tools, and many of her sketches and illustrations. These artifacts gave birth to the idea of displaying these important treasures. Venue: Rehoboth Art League.
