SUMMARY:ZZ Top
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:\"That Little 01' Band From Texas\" has been at it for well ove
r a\nhalf-century\, delivering rock\, blues and boogie on the road and in
the\nstudio to millions of devoted fans. With iconography as distinctive a
s\ntheir sound\, ZZ TOP is virtually synonymous with beards\, hotrod cars\
,\nspinning guitars and that magic keychain\, all of which transcend\ngeog
raphy and language. It was in Houston in the waning days of 1969\nthat ZZ
TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands\, Billy Gibbons'\nMoving Si
dewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill's American Blues.\nTheir third albu
m\, 1973's Tres Hombres\, catapulted them to national\nattention with the
hit \"La Grange\,\" still one of the band's signature\npieces today. Elimi
nator\, their 1983 album was something of a paradigm\nshift for ZZ TOP. Th
eir roots blues skew was intact but added to the\nmix were tech-age trappi
ngs that soon found a visual outlet with such\ntracks as \"Sharp Dressed M
an· and \"Legs\" on the nascent MTV. It was\none of the music industry's
first albums to have been certified\nDiamond\, far beyond Gold and Platinu
m and a reflection of US domestic\nsales exceeding 10 million units. As a
 touring entity\, they've been\nwithout peer over the past five decades\, h
aving performed before\nmillions of fans on four continents and have been
 the subject of their\nown Grammy-nominated documentary titled\, \"That Lit
tle Of Band From\nTexas.\" The band's line-up of the bearded Gibbons and H
ill and Beard\,\nwho ironically is clean-shaven\, remained intact for more
than 50 years\nuntil Dusty's passing. When Dusty temporarily departed the
tour in the\nsummer of 2021\, it was a given that Elwood would be the per
fect choice\nto stand in for Dusty until he could return. But Dusty's retu
rn was\nnot to be\, and Elwood continues to handle the bass duties for the
band\nnow and into the future. The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh\, endu
ring\nand above the transitory fray can be summed up in the three words of
 \nthe band's internal mantra: \"Tone\, Taste and Tenacity.\" As genuine\nr
oots musicians\, they have few peers. Their influences are both the\norigi
nators of the form — Muddy Waters\, B.B. King\, et al — as well\nas th
e British blues rockers and Jimi Hendrix who emerged the\ngeneration befor
e ZZ's ascendance. Venue: Freeman Arts Pavilion.
