DESCRIPTION:The Milford Museum American History Series will celebrate Black
\nHistory Month with a program titled The Red Ball Express presented by\nD
 ante Brizill on Saturday\, February 14\, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford\nPublic
Library in Milford\, Delaware. Following the D-Day invasion of\nWorld War
II\, the United States Army and its allies needed a reliable\ntransport se
rvice to carry the tons of supplies\, food\, and munitions\nneeded to equi
p the troops who were fighting their way across Europe\nto destroy the Ger
man war machine. Because aircraft was needed for\ncombat duties\, truck tr
ansportation was the only option available.\nTaking its name from a 19th c
entury American priority railroad service\nknown as “Red Ball\,” this
new mission became known as the Red Ball\nExpress. The drivers for this op
eration\, key to the Allied victory\,\nwere almost 75% African American.\n
