CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present its popular What M
akes Us\nTick? series during the Martin Luther King\, Jr. holiday weekend\
,\nJanuary 17-19. This analytical film and discussion series explores\nasp
ects of the human condition. This year’s theme is “Love and\nLife.”
Love means freedom from the confines of tradition. It means\nbeing loyal t
o a family member as they struggle with mental illness.\nIt means finding
one’s family\, even as an adult. It can be a\nstruggle\; it is not alway
 s perfect\; but\, as the viewer will see\, love\nenriches (and complicates
) every life. The three films in this\nyear’s series explore the ways th
at love is woven through the fabric\nof the lives of several characters in
honest\, uplifting and\nentertaining ways. Over the course of a weekend\,
you will find\nyourself moved and challenged in your conceptions of love\
, and\, as\nsoon as the credits roll\, you will want to discuss them with
your\nfellow audience members. Moderators for the after-film discussions f
or\neach film are Carolyn Walter and Mona Schwartz. Carolyn is a PhD\,\nLC
 SW\, Professor Emerita\, Center for Social Work Education\, Widener\nUnive
rsity and an Adjunct Professor at University of Pennsylvania\,\nSchool of
Social Work. After a career as a high school teacher in New\nYork City\, M
ona Schwartz spent the next 30 years as a senior business\nexecutive. Mona
is a movie buff and participates on two of the\nmini-festivals’ plannin
g committees. The series begins Friday\,\nJanuary 17 at 7:00 PM with the h
eartwarming feature “Above the\nClouds”. On her 18th birthday\, headst
rong and artistic Charlie makes\na startling discovery. The man married to
her mother isn't her dad.\nRecruiting Oz\, a rough sleeper whose only pos
session is his driving\nlicense\, she embarks on an epic road trip from Ma
rgate to the Isle of\nSkye to track down her biological father. On the jou
rney they both\nlearn more than they bargained for--about themselves\, eac
h other\, the\nimportance of family\, and why (sometimes) there really is
 no place\nlike home. [2018\, UK\, 87 minutes\, Not Rated]. The series cont
inues on\nSaturday\, January 18 at 1:00 PM with “Love Goes Through Your\
nMind”. Contrary to her parents' wishes\, 17-year-old Nina wants to\natt
end college on the East coast. But when her gifted older brother is\ndiagn
osed with bipolar disorder\, she fights against his and their\nparents’
denial that anything is wrong as he spirals out of control.\nAs his condit
ion worsens\, Nina reckons with her future as an artist\nand takes it upon
  herself to rescue him. [2018\, US/India\, 86 minutes\,\nNot Rated]. The s
eries closes on Sunday\, January 19 at 1:00 PM with\n“Kattumaram”. Mid
dle-aged fisherman Singaram takes into his home\nhis niece and nephew afte
r their parents are killed by the Tsunami.\nSingram sets out to find a hus
band for his niece Anandhi\, but she\nrejects all suitors. She wants the f
reedom to choose whom she will\nlove for herself and Singaram must come to
terms with his niece’s\nbreaking of tradition while dealing with the po
ssibly dangerous\nfallout within his close-knit village. “Kattumaram”
is a tale of\ntransformation and compassion\, of the restrictions of tradi
tion and\nthe beauty of accepting and living with all the different\npossi
bilities of the world. [2018\, India\, in Tamil with English\nsubtitles\,
73 minutes\, Not Rated]. What Makes Us Tick? is open to the\ngeneral publi
c and RBFS members. Admission prices for each screening\nare $9 for RBFS m
embers and $11 for future members. Customers are\nencouraged to purchase t
