SUMMARY:Painting with Wood | Robert Bruce Weston's Adventures in Marquetry
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Dating back to the early 16th century\, marquetry is the art of
\napplying thin pieces of wood veneer to form decorative pictures\,\npatte
rns\, and designs. Traditional marquetry recreates a notable image\nwith w
ood and can be found on objects such as bespoke furniture\,\ndecorative bo
xes\, wall panels\, and flooring. But for Robert Bruce\nWeston\, marquetry
becomes the centrepiece and driving inspiration for\nhis artmaking.  Fro
 m November 7-22\, Weston’s large-scale wood art\nwill be exhibited at th
e Peninsula Gallery. Robert’s marquetry work\nincludes finely crafted sc
enes of local icons — such as Breakwater\nLighthouse\, the Lewes canal\,
and the barn on Cave Neck Road —\nmajestic landscapes\, detailed archit
ecture\, and abstract imagery. His\npieces\, in contrast to classical marq
uetry\, lean towards\nnon-representational\, with some surrealism thrown i
 n. This allows\nviewers to have a more personal interpretation of Weston
’s work\,\nasking them to perceive each wooden composition through their
own\nartistic eye. Along with the artwork\, an educational display on how
\nthese intricate works are made will accompany the showcase.    An\nope
ning reception will be held on Saturday\, November 7\, from 5:00 to\n6:30
pm\, which is free and open to everyone. Weston will be in\nattendance\, g
iving patrons the opportunity to mingle with the artist.\nJoin Robert and
the gallery staff for an evening of fine art and\ncomplimentary food and d
rink. Robert Bruce Weston is a master\ncabinetmaker who has retired to Del
aware to pursue his love of art.\nDuring 40 years of on-the-job training w
orking for and with many\nfamous architects in the New York Metropolitan r
egion\, he absorbed\nmuch from their compositional abilities and design ex
pertise. In\nretirement\, he traded city living for the quiet life in Milt
on and has\nsettled into making paintings using wood veneer marquetry. Wes
ton\nexhibits at shows across the Delmarva Peninsula and has an in-home\ng
allery\, which is open by appointment only. He maintains memberships\nin t
he American and British Marquetry Societies\, the Biggs Museum's\nDelaware
by Hand\, and the Rehoboth\, Ocean City\, and Maryland\nFederation Art Le
 agues. Venue: Peninsula Gallery.
