n Mumbai\,\nIndia\, surrounded by artists and musicians\, Neelam Padte qui
ckly\ndiscovered her creative spirit and developed a keen interest in\nvar
ious forms of art. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design from the\nUnivers
ity of Mumbai\, Neelam emigrated to the United States in 1984.\nWhile rais
ing her family\, she worked as a computer graphic designer\,\nweb designer
 \, and computer programmer. Neelam became a full-time\nfloorcloth (hand-pa
inted canvas rug) artist in 2001. The patterns of\nher floorcloths are ins
pired by Colonial American wall and floor\ndesigns. After 14 years of work
ing with the floorcloths\, Neelam found\nthe creative process to be pleasi
ng yet repetitive. In pursuit of the\nnext stage in her art career\, she d
iscovered the freedom of\nabstraction by studying the works of Henri Matis
 se\, Mark Rothko\, Frank\nStella\, Helen Frankenthaler\, V. S. Gaitonde\,
and S. H. Raza. An\nunplanned immersion into spirituality released Neelam
from her comfort\nzone as an artist and gave her the courage to express he
rself freely\nin her newly developed abstract painting process\, which is
the subject\nof this showcase. Her landscapes are constructed with acrylic
s\, oil\nsticks\, graphite\, and charcoal and embrace minimalist compositi
ons\nwith large blocks of color and subtle texture. The subjects and color
s\nof her landscape paintings are influenced by the pairing of nature’s\
ninspirations reflected in her mood and impulses. She is inspired by\neart
h\, water\, wind\, fire\, and space as viewed through the prism of her\nso
ul. Neelam says of her work: “I express my emotions\, illusions\,\nand t
houghts through my paintings. My landscape paintings reflect the\noverall
essence of nature that I see or imagine. Using a limited\npalette\, I keep
compositions simple and my focus is on balancing\ncolors\, values\, and t
 exture.” Venue: Peninsula Gallery.
