 s have always been an\nimportant part of art\ncomposition. Even the very e
 arliest artists were aware that some\nsurfaces – still water\, shiny\nob
 jects\, even the eyes of a person or animal – would hold\nreflections an
 d realized that.\nDepicting them without said reflections would lead to a 
 flat and\nunrealistic appearance.\nReflections also allow the artist to en
 hance and play with light and\nhelp create a sense of\natmosphere. Artist 
 Laura Hickman does this beautifully in her pastel\,\n\"Canal with White
  Hotel\,\nBruges.\" The late afternoon shadows enhance the architectural 
 elements\nwhile they are echoed\nin the colorful water.\n\"Bruges is a 
 small coastal city in Belgium with meandering canals.\nEvery turn
  is a beautiful vista of the\ngorgeous architecture\, and\nenchant
 edly\, seen again reflected in the old canals.\"\n
