SUMMARY:Earth\, Water\, and Fire: Works by Lisa Battle
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Earth\, Water\, and Fire Works by Lisa Battle June 11\, 2021 -
July 18\,\n2021 Ventures Gallery Opening Reception: Friday\, June 11\, 2
021 (5 –\n7pm) Artist Statement My hand-built sculptures explore organic
form\,\nline and an undulating movement that is reminiscent of the sensua
l\ncurvilinear grace of natural objects and landscapes. I am inspired by\n
the patterns created by the forces of nature\, found in walks along the\ns
eashore observing shifting sand patterns created by winds and\nreceding wa
ves\; in my travels through the American southwest among\ndesert cliffs\,
canyons and formations of weathered rock eroded by wind\nand water\; and i
n the shapes of plants and the human body. I also have\na life-long love o
f dance\, and often find that my work evokes the\ngestures and arching mov
ements of a dancer. In my exploration of form\,\nI pare down these natural
shapes to their essence\, accentuating smooth\nclean lines to achieve sim
 plicity and elegance. Sometimes I feel that\nI am capturing a close-up\, i
ntimate view of something larger. The\nresulting forms evoke aspects of t
he natural world without\nspecifically representing them\, leading to a se
nse of ambiguity that I\nfind is central to human experience.  I love the
sensory experience\nof working with clay\, and the expressive possibiliti
es created through\nthis malleable material. The forces of nature are also
essential to\nthe creation of my work\, as my sculptures are exposed to t
he\ntransformative powers of wind and fire in the wood kiln. The wood\nfir
ing process leads to surfaces that have depth and subtle variations\nof te
xture and color\, imparted by the movement of wind and fire\nthrough the k
iln. The result is both a visual and tactile experience\nin which the surf
ace is inherently integrated with the form. Biography\nLisa Battle is an a
rtist who creates a distinctive style of abstract\nsculptures by hand-buil
ding with stoneware clay. She explores form and\nline in three-dimensional
space\, inspired by patterns created in\nnature through wind and water er
osion\, and the graceful arching\nmovements of dance. As a viewer moves ar
ound the work\, the lines\nadvance and recede\, giving an undulating sense
of movement. The subtle\nsurface treatments of her work are derived from
atmospheric firing\ntechniques\, including wood firing in a multi-chambere
d Noborigama kiln\nand pit firing. Lisa began working with clay about 13 y
ears ago after\ncompleting a masters’ degree in psychology. Her sculptur
es have been\nshown in juried exhibitions in the Washington\, DC and New Y
ork metro\nareas\, including several shows at the Brooklyn Waterfront Arti
sts’\nCoalition\, juried by curators from The Metropolitan Museum of Art
and\nMoMA. Lisa lives and works in Maryland\, where she is a member of th
e\nwood fire community at Monocacy River pottery near Frederick\,\nMarylan
 d. She is a former trustee of the Baltimore Clayworks\, a\nresident artist
at The Clay Co-op in Rockville\, Maryland\, and a member\nof the board of
the Washington Sculptors’ Group.\nImage: “Sanna”  hand-built fro
