SUMMARY:Conversation with Timothy Jay Smith | Fire on the Island
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Be part of a live\, interactive conversation with award-winning
\nnovelist and screenwriter\, Timothy Jay Smith\, about his latest novel\,
\nFire on the Island\, set on the Greek island of Lesvos. Publishers\nWeek
ly calls it a “perfect blend of intrigue\, romance\, and\ntravelogue.”
The novel is a playful romantic thriller with a gay\nGreek-American FBI a
gent\, who is undercover on the island to\ninvestigate a series of mysteri
ous fires. Set against the very real\nrefugee crisis on the beautiful\, su
 n-drenched Greek islands\, Smith\npaints a loving portrait of a community
in crisis. As the island\nresidents grapple with declining tourism\, pover
 ty\, refugees\, family\nfeuds\, and a perilously damaged church\, an arson
ist invades their\nmidst. A long time devotee of the Greek islands\, Smith
paints the\nsetting with gorgeous color and empathy\, and all the charm o
f Zorba\nthe Greek  while shedding bright light on the very real challeng
es of\nlife in contemporary Greece. Tim was a frequent visitor to Rehoboth
 \nBeach from 1980 until he moved here full-time in 1997. In 2005\, he and\
nhis partner relocated to France. His bio and information on his\nwriting
can be found here. Smith is willing to discuss aspects of his\nwriting pro
cess and share secrets about how he managed to succeed in a\nsecond career
that is elusive to so many aspiring authors. He welcomes\nquestions on th
e craft of writing itself: finding a story\, developing\ncharacters\, adap
ting real people and places to the page\, and the\nchallenges and unexpect
ed benefits of having gay protagonists in his\nmysteries and thrillers\, b
oth genres relatively underpopulated by\nLGBTQ people. You can email quest
ions to at\ntimothysmith.paris@gmail.com. Tim will be interviewed by Fay J
 acobs\, a\nnative New Yorker\, who has had a 35-year career in journalism\
, public\nrelations & theater. This event is co-sponsored by CAMP Rehoboth
. We\ninvite you to support the author and by purchasing a copy of the boo
